Portugal, one of the oldest nations in Europe, located on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula along the Atlantic coast and established its continental frontiers in 1297.

Portugal Attractions

Beja : the ancient Roman Town with valuable archaeological finds in the Queen Leonor Museum. Other places of interest are churches of Santo Antonio and Santa Maria, convent and castle of Sao Francisco, chapel of Santo Andre, Misericordia church and Roman ruins at Pisoes.

Elvas : the fortress town with Roman Arab Castle, Amoreirs Aqueduct of the 15 th-17 th century. The other places of interest are churches of Nossa Senhora da Consolacao, Santa Clara of the 17 th century, mother church and the Archaeology and Ethnography Museum.

Evora : the museum town of Roman origins and historic center classified in UNESCO’s heritage list. The Roman temple located close to the Cathedral and houses the sacred art museum.

Marvao : the town lies south of Castelo de Vide and is popular for the 13 th-14 th century impressive castles. The convent of Nossa senhora da Estrela built in the 15 th century is located outside the city with ceramic tiles dating back from the 18 th century.

Monsaraz : the medieval village with castles and fortifications and the nearby village of Reguengos there is a megalithic nucleus with over 100 dolmens and cromlechs.

Portalegre : the towers and walls of the medieval castle stands the Pacos do Concelho and Hospital da Misericordia. Other places of interest are the cathedral, Sao Bernardo Convent, the church of Sao Francisco Monestary, the regional sacred heart, municipal library and Casa de Jose Regio museums.

Troia : located on a peninsula of the southern bank of river Sado, has important Roman remains of industrial complex for salting fish. Many beautiful sandy beaches fringe the peninsula.

Figueira da Foz : the summer resort at the mouth of the Mondego river with long sandy beaches and water sports facilities. Other special attractions are mother-church, Casa do Paco, municipal museum, santa catarina fortress and pelourinho.

Alcobaca : the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria in the UNESCO international heritage list was founded in 1152. The church houses the Gothic tombs of king Pedro I and Ines de Castro, the chapter house and an enormous kitchen.

Batalha : the monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria was built by king John I to the Virgin, to a vow if the Castillian’s invaders were defeated. The grand monument to the closing phase of Portuguese Gothic, whose construction began in 1388.

Knock airport passenger numbers up 13% (RTÉ News)
Ireland West Airport Knock's latest travel figures reveal that a total of 629,000 passengers used the airport in 2008, up 73,000, or 13%, on the previous year. This made 2008 the busiest year ever for the Co Mayo airport.
