Lucerne

Lucernee city is located at the point where river Reuss flows out of LakeLucernee, it is a photogenic city and one of Switzerland’s top tourist destination. Lucernee became a transit town with a growing traffic of foreigners, merchants, pilgrims and craftsmen who often bought new views and ideas to the city. As a political entity the city of Lucernee emerged between the 12 th and the 14 th century as the outcome of a dispute between two centers one side the St. Leodegar Benedictine monastery and on the other side the town settlement north of the Reuss Bridge with its market.

Lucernee remains one of the most beautiful towns in Switzerland because after 1949 a turnaround in town development brought an appreciation of the cultural heritage and today tourism is the dominating activity. There are various places of tourist attraction in the city, the main attractions are Glacier Garden built around a glacial pothole survived since the Ice Age; The Kapellbrucke Bridge is the city’s most famous icon built in 1333, much of the bridge had to be renovated following a destructive fire in 1993 that destroyed several of its paintings and the remaining few paintings are worth seeing.

The museums in the city are Richard Wagner Museum located 2 miles from the city in the suburb of Tribschen exhibiting some original scores and memorabilia including letters and pictures and there are also antique musical instruments; Verkenrshaus der Schweiz- the Swiss Transport Museum is one its best in Europe, it has recently added many new attractions containing new rail exhibits and an adventure ride called the Gotthard Tunnel Show; Museum of Swiss History originally conceived as an arsenal for the storage of weapons in the 1560s was reconstructed as a showplace for medieval and Renaissance art and sculptures in 1983; and the Modern Art Museum has a permanent collection of works ranging from the 15 th to the 20 th centuries.

Some of the other main attractions in the city are the Mt. Rigi, The Nine Towers, Dying Lion of Lucernee Monument and The Lake Luzern. Accommodation in the city is in plenty for the toursits ranging from 5 star to 3 star hotels providing comfortable accommodation. There are many other resorts, and restaurants providing accommodation. Accommodation is filled during the peak season and it is advisable to book your accommodation several weeks in advance.
