Keywest

Keywest is a small island and lies near the end of the chain of islands known as the Florida Keys and is the southern most city in the continental United States. The city initially developed because of its proximity to the Florida Straits, the abutting Florida Reef, strong offshore ocean currents and the area’s unpredictable winds, combined with a large natural deep water harbour and deep channels into the harbour. The Keywest of Keywest serves as a gateway both to the Caribbean and between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico was recognised by the military at an early date.

World class tourist attractions in the city of Keywest is what it is famous for. Keywest is divided into two main districts, Old Town Keywest contains many tourist attractions, sights and hotels and the New Town Keywest is occupied by mainly businesses and locals. The main tourist attratctions include the Audubon House and the Tropical Gardens which is a well preserved 19 th century home with landscaped tropical gardens. Some of the other famous attractions in the city are the City Cementery located in the center of town it is a plot of land best known for its memorial and numerous intricate carvings in honour of the sailors who fell in the sinking of the battle ship USS maine, the Keywest Aquarium one of the world’s oldest aquarium with exotic sea creatures including sea cucumbers, starfish, crabs and even horse and queen conchs, the Old Town Trolley the ideal way to see the island with pick ups at many hotels along its route and the Southernmost House Grand Hotel and Museum which has been the residence of five US presidents upon their visit to Keywest. Some of the famous beaches are the South beach also know as City Beach, Simonton Street Beach located near the harbour and the Ernest Hemingway Home the former home of the popular writer Ernest Hemingway and his wife Pauline is now a museum to the couple who spent most of the 1930’s and early 1940’s.

The city also houses some of the excellent and numeruou museums and art galleries covering the island’s history from the time of the arrival of African-Bahama immigrants and Cuban exiles to the strong presidential presence of the 1950s and the 1960s. Some of the famous museums are the East Martello Museum located near the airport originally built as a fort during the Civil War now a museum exhibiting Keywest’s coloruful past including the history of sponging and cigar making, the Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum originally served as a winter home for the US presidents Truman and Kennedy and contains audiovisual and photographic exhibits on important visiting dignitaries over the years, the Lighthouse Museum built in 1847 containing nautical charts, old photographs and other interesting artifacts related to the sea and lighthouse and the Maritime Heritage Society Museum with riches from South America in 1622 when they sank to the west of Keywest.
