
Houston
Houston lies in the southeast corner of Texas near the Gulf of Mexico and is the largest city in the whole of Texas. Founded in 1836 on the banks of Buffalo Bayou this southeast Texan city is named after General Sam Houston of the Texas Army that won independence from Mexico. Despite its high rise skyline Houston has an open feel with several lakes and waterways winding their way through the city surrounded by lush green landscape. Houston’s economy has diversified including major aerospace and medical services and it is again a city oozing with wealth and money attracting tourists from around the globe.
Houston is famous for many of its world class tourist attractions especially the Downtown Aquarium containing an enormous half million gallon complex showcasing under water life from around the world. The other attractions in the city- Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens set in the beautiful River Oaks with a collection of American Folk Art and furniture and antiques dating from the 1600’s, the Houston Zoo located in Houston’s museum district in Hermann Park featuring an array of attractions and animals from around the world including tigers, koalas, vampire bats and meerkats and the Space Center Houston the number one tourist attraction, great for the adults and kids with numerous interactive displays and plenty of space related going on and the main attraction at this place is the moon rock viewing astronauts train for their next space walk.
The city of Houston houses some fabulous museums in the city located in an ideal downtown Houston next to the popular Hermann Park. Some of these are the Children Museum loaded with fun hands on exhibits including Bubble lab and Kid TV giving the kids the opportunity to learn about TV production, the Menil Collection which is a collection of art in the city of Houston with more than 15000 20 th century pieces focusing on post war American and modernist art, the Rienzi Museum exhibiting antiques and European art mostly predating to the 19 th century and is particularly noted for its impressive collection of English porcelain and the Museum of Natural Science boasting many varied and impressive exhibitions including collections of dinosaur skeletons and Texan wild life.
