
Hanover
Hanover City is located and also the capital of lower Saxony in north central Germany, the city dates back to the 12 th century. The city was destroyed in the 2 nd World War bombing and little of the Altstadt (Old Town) remains intact. Today, Hanover is one of the richest cities of Germany.
The main attractions of the city are the gardens of Herrenhausen, the Kesner Museum and the popular Niedersachsisches Landesmuseum.
Hanover Attractions
Wilhelm Busch Museum – the museum is housed in Wallmoden Castle in the Georgian Gardens and displays collections of pictures and drawings by Wilhelm Busch. Germany’s greatest cartoonist and creator (creator of Max & Moritz, comic figures). After the extension of the museum to include five centuries of caricatures and graphics by a host of German and international artist.
Maschsee – situated near the center of the city is an artificial lake and is Hanover’s popular recreational areas. The lake is perfect for many water sports like sailing, windsurfing, rowing, swimming and in the winter season when the lake is frozen, ice-skating.
Marktkirche – the church in the market place was built in the 14 th century with the old town near by are considered to be the southernmost specimens of the ‘North German neo-Gothic’ style. The construction of the tower was stopped in the half stage due to shortages in the town’s coffers and for financial reasons a shortened spire was mounted. The church was badly destroyed in the 2 nd World War and rebuilt with scenes from the saddest chapter of German history was designed by Gerhard Marcks.
Sprengel Museum – the museum includes the personal collections of the local industrialist Bernhard Sprengel. The collections include displays of modern art by the likes of Picasso, Chagall, Klee and Nolde. A section of the museum is dedicated to the works of the dadaist artist Kurt Schwitter and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
Feuerwehrmuseum – the museum was established on the grounds of the first fire brigade at Goetheplatz on the imitative of the fireman in 1980. The museum displays collections of uniforms, machines and documents from the 18 th century to the present day.
Aqualaatzium – the health spa located near the exhibition center has a long slide, a foot bath, whirlpools, Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The sauna area includes standard Finnish saunas as well as the more exotic earth sauna and lake sauna. The health spa boasts of steam baths, steam with flower baths, relaxation room and in the summer outdoor pools are available.
Anzeiger Hochhaus – the first high rise building in Hanover was built in 1927 by the Hannover Anzeiger and was a symbol of city’s press. The magazines like Spiegel and Stern were founded in the building.
Steintor - the exit of city walls existed on the site in the Middle Ages and in 1994 a yellow and black fortress designed by the Italian Alessandro Mendini. The modern castle is a tram stop and is part of internationally acclaimed street design project with the theme bus stop, which was imitated by the traffic department.
